Brent Waters

Distinguished Scientist

Brent Waters is the Director of the CIS Lab and a Distinguished Scientist at NTT Research. His interests are in the realm of cryptography computer security and his work is focused on identity-based cryptography, functional encryption, and code obfuscation. A recipient of numerous awards and invited papers, Brent is noted as a founder of functional encryption and attribute-based encryption. His work has also been honored four times by the IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science Test-of-Time Award, which recognizes articles published at previous conferences for their enduring scientific value and impact.

 

Brent earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University and was a post-doctoral student at Stanford University. Prior to joining NTT Research in 2019, Brent was a Computer Scientist at SRI and on the faculty of The University of Texas at Austin.
